This tour of the African American Museum will explore first-tier options for going green and will discuss how self-assessment and prioritization help plan longer-term changes to improve sustainability. The session will be led by Sarah S. Brody, an independent consultant helping museums and other cultural institutions become environmentally and financially sustainable through grants, mainstreaming activities and green performance.

Going Green through Social Marketing

I’m curious to see, in some of the AAM sessions,  if anyone talks about changing visitor behavior through exhibits and programs?  If so, do any of them address accomplishing their goals using a social marketing approach?   I just read a recent Time article ,How Obama Is Using The Science of Change ,that talks about how Obama has embraced behavioral science within his administration to “manipulate” the public into changing their behavior (ex. adopting green practices).  It seems like a cutting edge way of thinking about traditional modes of message delivery in exhibits as well as how museums can impact their visitors in ways that resonate beyond the walls of the institution and into individual lives & communities.  How would a museum use social marketing to effect change in visitors?  What would it look like?…
